Manhattan Office Tower Mass Shooting: Who Was Shane Tamura?
A gunman identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan office tower Monday evening, killing four people, including an NYPD officer, before dying by suicide on the 33rd floor. Authorities are still working to determine the motive behind the calculated and deadly attack that has shaken the heart of New York City.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on July 28, Tamura entered 345 Park Avenue—a major high-rise in Midtown—and began firing with an AR-15–style rifle. He was wearing body armor and moved quickly through the lobby and upper floors, fatally shooting multiple victims, including Officer Didarul Islam, 36, before turning the weapon on himself.
A fifth person remains in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.
Tamura had driven cross-country to New York in the days before the attack, passing through Colorado, Iowa, and New Jersey. His car—recovered near the scene—contained additional weapons, ammunition, and medication.
So far, there is no clear connection between Tamura and the building, which houses several financial and media firms. Law enforcement sources say no manifesto has been found, and the FBI has joined the NYPD in analyzing digital evidence from his devices.
“This was a deliberate, targeted act of violence,” said NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban.
“We’re working nonstop to understand his motive.”
Officer Didarul Islam, killed in the line of duty, was praised as a hero who attempted to protect building occupants. His death marks one of the deadliest single-day losses for NYPD in recent years.
“We lost a protector,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a press conference. “This was an act of evil.”
News of Tamura’s identity—and the viral resurfacing of a 2015 video showing him at a high school football game—has lit up social media, with users speculating on his motive, mental state, and choice of location.
